Uncommon gifts from Uncommon Goods

November 25, 2014

With each year of gift giving among adults I get more and more stressed.  With kids it is easy - a new toy for a growing interest, a new outfit for a growing body, or a new game for a growing mind.  But, adults don’t seem to grow as quickly.  It forces me to to think - what can I get the person that has everything?  And, what can I get the person that, as an adult with their own bank account, can usually purchase whatever their heart desires?

This year my mind is at ease.  I have discovered an exciting online shop that has all sorts of goods.  Aptly named UncommonGoods, their name doesn’t only describe their awesome selection of goods, that are well, uncommon, but it also describes their amazingly uncommon business ethics.  It is based here in Brooklyn, carries unique, many handmade gifts, that are mostly made right here in the good ‘ol US of A.  This is a company that is putting the environment first and their gifts are made without harm to animals or people.  And speaking of people, their lowest paid employee starts at 50% above minimum wage.  Yes.  You read that correctly.  FIFTY percent ABOVE minimum wage.  No overworked, underpaid employees here.  What is not to love?

Clicking through their site I am torn between browsing for myself, and the task at hand - finding the right gift for the right person this holiday season.

First on my list is the gift for the newly married couple.  My husband and I have attended several weddings in the past year and I am a sucker for a personalized gifts.   Not so much an engraved piece, but a piece that looks like art, made especially for them.  I came across this photo print that I just love.   Called ‘intersection of love’ this print can hang anywhere.  In an entryway, in a bedroom, in a living room, heck, even in the bathroom!  It is a simple design, and - what I love most - is that it could work for a couple that each kept their last name, or, it can serve as a reminder that before the Mrs. became a Mrs., she was a Miss something-else.  Click here to check out more unique gifts, where you can shop by price, interest, gender, and more!

Next on my list is the sports-loving guy.  I hopped over to the list for men here, and an item that caught my eye was the ticket stub diary.  This item  is a great gift for a concert, movie, show, or sports lover.  I am a keeper of anything that reminds me of anything, and this is a very organized and space saving way to do it!  Rather than have shoeboxes full of ticket stubs, you can place them in this diary and place the diary right on your bookshelf.

Now, for the ever-tricky gal pal.  Lots of my friends fall into two categories - those that buy what they want when they want it, and those that never buy for themselves because they are busy buying for their children or others.  So.  What can you get someone that has a lot, or, someone who never treats themself?  Two words.  Cashmere.  Scarf.  I love scarves.  I have so many.  Different ones for different outfits, or occasion, or temperature.  I am a firm believer that you can never have too many.  So, when I saw this  upcycled cashmere scarf, I knew I hit the jackpot.   As environmental issues get more coverage, more and more people love the idea of upcycling.  This amazing scarf is handmade from old cashmere sweaters and what I love most, since they are made from various sweaters, no two are alike!  It is a very unique gift.  You can choose between cool or warm colors.

Finally on my list are helper gifts.  These are the special people that have an impact on our daily lives - teachers, nannies, babysitters, assistants, etc.  I like to pick a lovely, unique gift that shows my appreciation for all the love and time they give.  This year, with both of my kids in school, my helper gift list is a long one.  So, I am not looking to spend a lot of money - especially because this list is so long - I can easily sort the gift guide, and select gifts under $25, and start my search

First up, I am loving the caterpillar bud vase. This adorable mini vase will look great on a coffee table, an end table, a kitchen counter, basically anywhere.  Next, again thinking of our lovely planet, the recycled wine bottle platters. These will look great placed right next to their original purpose, a bottle of wine!  A great display piece.

As I said earlier in this post, uncommon goods, is, quite simply, a site where you can truly find unique gifts.  This is a company that has great respect for creative individuals and their product list shows that.  I hope you have as much fun selecting gifts for your loved ones as I did!
