What’s on your reading list?

image

I’ve finally decided to stop working on the subway and read books since this is the only time I seem to have to read. It may take longer to finish but I love that I start to think about my book as I start packing up for the trek home. I’ve had a few books I have been holding onto since last summer such as The Age of Miracles which I will be starting (finally!) today. My co-worker chose News from Heaven and Everything is Perfect When You’re A Liar for me from her book pile at work and since I’ve never been disappointed by her choices these are in the queue to be read for spring(okay, so I’m ambitious). Stay tune on a book report!

I also include two of my picks. These are MB’s 5 favorites that through trial and error and research we feel you can rely on as a new mom looking for your first stroller or a parent searching for that next stroller to last you for many years. The Reliable Stroller

1. iCandy Peach, Retail: $899.00 via WeeBabe  *

The iCandy is the new Bugaboo. No tire blow outs here this stroller from the UK is sleek, stylish, easy to push and is compatible with a bassinet & car seat. The storage is great regardless of the recline level your baby is at and the frame folds down easily. The best part is it can convert to a double when the time comes.

Pros: Great maneuverability, attractive, full recline, no air tires and great storage

Cons: Price is high, base is on the wide end

We have 2 now stroller

2. Phil &TedsVerve Stroller via Buy Buy Baby, $699.

When out of town friends visit New York , I always hear a comment that they cannot believe how older kids are still in strollers. Yes, we know non-city people but you try juggling a few kids on a busy Brooklyn street. The Phil & Ted Verve stroller is perfect for a mom looking to move to a double stroller yet does not want the bulk.

Pros: Holds up to two children, more narrow then most double strollers

Cons: Frame is heavy

The Urban Favorite

3. UppaBaby Cruz, Retail: $459.00 available at WeeBabe

The UppaBaby Cruz is a great city stroller and quite popular in our Brooklyn neighborhood- It’s lightweight which makes it  easy to maneuver and the price point is a plus. UppaBaby has a reputation for well made products and great customer service which trust us when you have stroller drama you do not want a customer rep to make you feel like just another mom but to really take in your questions and concerns . The Cruz comes in a variety of colors and perfect for taller parents.

Pros: Has all the basics covered, easy to push
Cons: Bottom seat recline, not ideal stroller for infants, lacks longevity

A Great Buy

4. Cybex Callisto – Retails $349.00 (bassinet is extra) WeeBabe

Cybex Callisto is an everything you’ll need ever need in one stroller choice which means it will last for many years to come. It’s essentially an umbrella stroller with the capacity to hold a bassinet & car seat. It eliminates the need to buy an umbrella stroller. Its lightweight and very easy to push.

Pros – Reasonable price point, well-made

Cons – Bassinet is extra, the handle bars don’t adjust

Toddler Friendly Stroller

5. Maclaren Quest Sport, $270. via diapers.com

A lightweight stroller with such features  as four-position recline, ultra-light and compact (folded) chassis, smooth steering, and those signature Maclaren high handle bars. Comfortable seating.

Pros: Padded seat , Rain-cover included, One hand fold

Con: Sun canopy not too sturdy and doesn’t fully cover baby, minimal storage which urban moms need plenty of. Wheels seem to wear out sooner then most strollers.

Happy Mother’s Day.

image

Last night as I process what has been a challenging few weeks I read the most beautiful poem from Casey Leigh of The Wiegands regarding her son who is growing up. With all lifes struggles & challenges this poem reminds me of why I so love being a mother.

Open hands.

Us mamas…
we wake up early, we tend to every need.
We cradle them in the night and we whisper and hold them close when they are afraid of the dark shadows in the hours when the world is sleeping.
We walk through the halls of our homes checking each bed, kissing each forehead… only hearing the small squeaks from our toes as they run along the long, cold floors. I often run my fingers slowly through their hair as they are off in a dreamland of slumber.

Us mamas.
We kiss their ouchies and we rock them to sleep with a lullaby.
We teach them how to be and how to love.

We show them what to live for and fight for…
we start out as the tiny voice they hear in their little minds.

We love fiercely.
We fear fiercely.

We beg God for protection and gasp for air when we think about how vulnerable our hearts are now forever out in the world walking around in other tiny bodies.

Us mamas we take these tiny fragile innocent beings…. and we raise them, and love them and fight for them in every battle big and small.

Being a mama hurts. Loving something so passionately and so fiercely hurts.
But it is so beautifully rewarding & life giving.

Time. It gives and it takes.

Happy Mother’s day.
