Gardening in Brooklyn

April 10, 2013

If you don’t follow us on Twitter - you may not know we redid our backyard & created some garden boxes. As you may recall from this post - I read a lovely book about the benefits of teaching gardening to children. Qualities like patience, care, learning their place in the world help create strong bonds to the earth & others. I gotta say after a few weeks and especially now that our peas & beans have popped up, I’ve noticed my kids are entranced. We talk a lot about seeds & the how they grow -whats going on underneath the group and what the plant will look like when its ready.

We’re doing an herb garden. peas, beans, bok choy, beets, spinach, strawberries & cabbage first go round. Once that’s done, we’ll move on to our tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zucchini and ultimately late summer stuff like pumpkins, kale, sweet potatoes! I’m so excited to finally try out gardening.
If you have any interest in growing edibles, even if its inside your apartment or on your fire escape - check out this book. Even a few herbs do wonders for children’s imaginations!
